Next it’s time to evaluate what’s happening underground. Healthy soil contains a mix of organic matter, minerals, air spaces, and living microbes. Collectively, these components are responsible for creating soil structure and determine fertility. For your tree to thrive, it’s important choose a tree species that will remain healthy and reach maturity in the soil you plant it in.

Healthy soil is living soil.

Before you embark on a large-scale planting scheme or plant expensive specimen trees, getting your soil tested by a professional lab is a modest investment and a smart move. Consult an arborist, your local independent nursery, or research local soil labs online for instructions on how to collect soil samples and where to send them for analysis. Test results, which usually arrive in a couple of weeks, provide a complete analysis of nutrients, possible contamination, and pH (alkalinity or acidity) and offer specific directions for correcting any revealed deficiencies.
